Tree Timber Value Estimator

Get a rough timber value for a standing tree. Enter the species, diameter at breast height, merchantable height in 16-foot logs, and log grade to get board feet, stumpage, and delivered value.

How to use
  1. Select the species and log grade.
  2. Enter the DBH in inches.
  3. Enter the merchantable height in 16-foot logs.
Estimates based on typical values; your real usage and rates will vary.

How it's calculated

value = (Doyle board feet ÷ 1,000) × price per MBF × grade factor

Doyle board feet per 16-ft log = (d − 4)², d = log small-end diameter (in), summed over the logs; MBF = board feet ÷ 1,000; price per MBF set by species; grade factor 0.3–1.4. Delivered-log value ≈ 2.1 × stumpage.

Common questions

What is the Doyle log rule?

It is a common US formula for estimating board feet in a log from its small-end diameter and length. It tends to underestimate volume on smaller logs.

What is stumpage value?

Stumpage is what a buyer pays for the standing timber before it is cut, which is lower than the delivered value at the mill.
