Grams to Moles Calculator (n = m / M)

Enter a mass in grams and the molar mass, and it returns the number of moles using n = m / M. Pick a preset substance or type your own molar mass, and it can also report the particle count.

How to use
  1. Pick a preset substance or enter a custom molar mass.
  2. Enter the mass in grams.

How it's calculated

n = m ÷ M

n = amount in moles, m = mass in grams, M = molar mass in g/mol. Particles N = n × 6.022×10²³ (Avogadro). Reverse: m = n × M.

Common questions

How do I convert grams to moles?

Divide the mass in grams by the molar mass in g/mol. For water (M = 18.015), 36 g is about 2 moles.

How many molecules are in one mole?

About 6.022 × 10²³, which is Avogadro's number. The calculator multiplies your moles by it to give the particle count.
