The factor, and why it is only an estimate
A calibrated pharmacy dropper delivers about 20 drops per mL of water or a water-based solution, so one drop is roughly 0.05 mL. This is a reference figure (the "gtt" standard), not a guarantee — the real drop volume swings with the liquid and the dropper tip. When accuracy matters, measure in mL.
The drop factor depends on what you are dropping
"Drops per mL" is not one number. The three settings on the calculator match the three common contexts.

IV sets print their drop factor on the package. Pharmacy droppers and IV sets are not interchangeable without converting.

Essential oils run 15 to 22 drops per mL, so a 5 mL bottle holds roughly 75 to 110 drops rather than 100.
What throws the count off
- Viscosity. Thick liquids like glycerin form bigger drops, so fewer make a milliliter.
- Surface tension. Alcohol and other low-tension liquids form smaller drops, packing more into a milliliter.
- Tip size. A wider dropper opening releases a larger drop. This is why "count the drops" is unreliable for dosing.
