Four quarts to a gallon, exactly

quarts = gallons × 4,   gallons = quarts ÷ 4

"Quart" is literally a quarter of a gallon, so the factor is a clean 4 with nothing to round. The full chain is 1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 fluid ounces. The ratio is the same whether you mean US liquid, US dry or Imperial — only the size of the underlying gallon changes.

The ratio 4:1 is geometric, so temperature never changes it. Density does shift with temperature, so only the weight of a liquid moves, not the quart count.

A US quart and an Imperial quart are not the same size

The gallon differs across systems, and the quart follows it. An Imperial gallon is about 20 percent larger than a US one, so a British recipe calling for "1 quart" means roughly a fifth more liquid than a US quart.

1 Imperial quart1,136 mL
1 US liquid quart946 mL

The same word, a 20 percent gap. Use a US quart where the recipe means Imperial and you come up nearly a fifth short.

Common questions

How many quarts are in a gallon?

Exactly 4. A quart is one quarter of a gallon, which is where the name comes from. This holds in every system: US liquid, US dry and Imperial all have 4 quarts to the gallon.

How do I convert gallons to quarts?

Multiply the gallons by 4. So 3 gallons is 12 quarts. To go the other way, divide quarts by 4: 20 quarts is 5 gallons.

Is a quart the same as a liter?

Close but not equal. A US liquid quart is 0.946 liters, about 5 percent short of a liter. A liter is 1.057 US quarts. For recipes that gap can matter.
