The exact factor, and the shortcut

stone = kilograms ÷ 6.35029,   kilograms = stone × 6.35029

One stone is exactly 14 pounds, and one pound is 0.45359237 kg, so a stone is 6.35029 kg. For a fast estimate, divide the kilograms by 6.4: 80 kg → 80 ÷ 6.4 = 12.5 stone, within a rounding of the exact 12.60.

Reading stone and pounds correctly

  • 14 pounds to the stone. Not 16 (that is ounces to the pound). To split kilograms into "st + lb", convert to total pounds first, then divide by 14 — the whole number is stones, the remainder is pounds.
  • Pounds stay under 14. "11 st 6" is valid; "11 st 15" is not — that is 12 st 1.
  • A British and Irish unit. Stone was withdrawn from UK trade in 1985 but stays in everyday use for body weight. The US uses pounds only, not stone.

Common questions

What is 70 kg in stone?

70 kg is 11.02 stone, which reads as 11 st 0 lb. It is a common way to state adult body weight in the UK and Ireland.

How do I convert kg to stone in my head?

Divide the kilograms by 6.35, or by a round 6.4 for a quick estimate. 76 kg divided by 6.4 is about 11.9 stone; the exact answer is 11.97.

Is a stone the same as a pound?

No. One stone is 14 pounds. Stone is the larger unit, used mainly for body weight in Britain and Ireland; the pound is used in both the UK and the US.

Why does the calculator show stone and pounds separately?

People state weight as "11 st 6", not 11.4 stone. The whole stones come first, then the leftover pounds (always 0 to 13), found by dividing the total pounds by 14 and keeping the remainder.
