Dividing by 12, and the whole-and-remainder form

years = months ÷ 12

Divide months by 12 for the decimal answer. To read it as "years and months," take the whole part as full years and the remainder as leftover months: 30 months = 2 years 6 months, because 30 ÷ 12 = 2 remainder 6. The common trap is 18 months — that is 1 year 6 months, not 1 year 8 months.

To go the other way, multiply years by 12: 2.5 years is 30 months.

When a "month" is not the same length

  • Calendar months vary. They run 28 to 31 days, averaging 30.44 (365.25 ÷ 12). For a day-exact figure, months × 30.44 ÷ 365.25 gives years — usually a rounding away from the simple ÷12.
  • Bank months are often 30 days. Finance frequently uses a 30-day month and a 360-day year to simplify interest, which shifts results slightly from the real calendar.

Common questions

How many years is 18 months?

18 months is 1.5 years, which reads as 1 year and 6 months. The calculation is 18 divided by 12. It is not 1 year 8 months — months count in twelves, not tens.

How many months is a 30-year mortgage?

360 months, which is 360 payments. That is why loan schedules are often written in months: 15 years is 180, 20 years is 240, 30 years is 360.

How many years is 100 months?

8 years and 4 months, or about 8.33 years. Twelve goes into 100 eight times with 4 left over.
