Stone times fourteen

pounds = stone × 14

One stone is exactly 14 pounds, a British unit still used for body weight in the UK and Ireland. To do it in your head, take stone × 10 and add stone × 4: 12 stone is 120 + 48 = 168 lb. A mixed weight like “11 stone 7” is 11 × 14 + 7 = 161 lb.

Watch the leftover pounds

  • Going from pounds, keep the remainder. 155 lb is 11 stone 1 lb (155 ÷ 14 = 11 remainder 1), not a flat 11 stone.
  • Stone is not kilograms. “12 stone” is 168 lb, over five times heavier than 12 kg. It is an easy slip when reading British weights.
  • The word stays singular. British usage says “14 stone,” not “14 stones,” when stating a weight.
