Gravel Estimator (yards, tons, and cost)

Works out how much gravel you need from the length, width, and depth of the area. You get cubic yards and meters, US and metric tons, and an optional cost if you enter a price.

How to use
  1. Enter length, width, and depth in your preferred units.
  2. Pick the gravel type so the weight uses the right density.
  3. Add a price per ton or yard to see the total cost.

How it's calculated

yd³ = (L × W × D) ÷ 0.7646 ; tons = yd³ × density

L = length, W = width, D = depth (all converted to metres for the m³ volume), 0.7646 = m³ per cubic yard, density = material weight in US tons per yd³ (crushed gravel ≈ 1.5, pea gravel ≈ 1.4).

Common questions

How deep should a gravel layer be?

A walkway is usually 2 to 3 inches deep, while a driveway often needs 4 to 6 inches over a base layer.

How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?

Most gravel runs about 1.4 to 1.7 US tons per cubic yard, depending on the stone type and how wet it is.
