The 10-gallons-per-inch rule
Tank size is driven by the turtle's straight carapace length (SCL), measured shell-front to shell-back in a straight line. The baseline is ten gallons of water for every inch.
This is a minimum for the water portion, on top of a dry basking area. It is the floor for one turtle; a second turtle roughly doubles the requirement and often causes aggression.
Why big adults need more than the rule says
The linear rule works for small and mid-size turtles, but a turtle twice as long has about eight times the body mass and waste output. Past roughly 8 inches, cubic scaling gives a more honest number.
For a 10-inch turtle the linear rule says 100 gallons, but mass-based scaling points to about 150 — half as much again.

Common questions
How many gallons per inch of turtle?
The standard rule is 10 gallons of water per inch of straight carapace (shell) length. A 5-inch turtle needs about 50 gallons; a full-grown 8-inch red-eared slider needs 75 to 100.
Do I measure the shell straight or over the curve?
Straight. Measure the straight-line carapace length from the front edge of the shell to the back, not following the dome. Measuring over the curve overstates the length and oversizes the tank.
Should I buy for the hatchling size or the adult size?
Buy for the adult. Aquatic turtles grow fast, and a bigger tank keeps the water chemistry stable. Even a small turtle is usually started in at least a 50-gallon setup.
