Four factors that multiply to total emissions
Population, wealth per person, energy intensity, and carbon intensity. On paper the terms cancel to a plain total, which is why it is called an identity. The point is that each factor has its own data source and its own trend, so you can pull emissions apart and see what is actually pushing them up or down.

The two falling factors are the levers. Between 1990 and 2020 population and rising incomes outweighed better efficiency and a slowly cleaner energy mix, so global emissions still climbed about 40%.
Why it beats a single per-capita number
- Emissions per person is just one ratio. Kaya splits it further, into how wealthy a country is, how efficiently it uses energy, and how clean that energy is.
- Growth need not mean more CO₂. Rising GDP per person can pair with falling emissions if energy and carbon intensity drop faster, which is exactly what sustainability scenarios assume.
- Two intensities, two jobs. Energy intensity is about using less energy; carbon intensity is about switching to cleaner sources. Cutting emissions usually needs both.

What is the Kaya identity?
It breaks total CO2 emissions from energy into four factors: population, GDP per person, energy used per unit of GDP, and CO2 released per unit of energy. Multiplying them back together returns total emissions. The value is that each factor can be measured and forecast on its own.
If the factors cancel out, why is it useful?
Mathematically the identity is a tautology: population divides out, GDP divides out, energy divides out. Its use comes from the data. You measure each factor separately and see which one is driving an emissions change, so you know whether to target wealth, efficiency, or the energy mix.
Which factor is easiest to change?
Energy intensity, the energy used per unit of GDP. It responds to policy and technology within years through insulation, efficient machinery and process improvement. Globally it has fallen about 1.5% a year since 1990, faster than carbon intensity at roughly 0.5%.
