What actually drives the number
The base is one rate times how many times the sitter comes. Everything else is an add-on: each extra pet is about +50% of the base rate, and holidays carry a surcharge (roughly +25% to +50%). Location and experience shift the base rate up or down before you multiply.
Typical US rates by service
| Service | Base rate | Common range |
|---|---|---|
| Drop-in, 15 min | $18 | $15–$25 |
| Drop-in, 30 min | $27 | $20–$35 |
| Drop-in, 60 min | $40 | $30–$50 |
| Overnight (10–12 h) | $95 | $75–$150 |
| Week of daytime care | $250–$375 | per week |
Where you live moves the base: rural is about −25%, suburban is the baseline, urban is +35%, and major metros (NYC, SF, LA, Boston, DC, Seattle, Miami) are about +50%.
The add-ons people forget
- Extra pets. The first pet pays the full rate; each additional pet adds roughly 50% of it. A 30-minute visit for one dog is $27; for three dogs it is about $54.
- Holiday surcharge. Thanksgiving adds around 35%, Christmas through New Year about 50%, other holidays 15% to 30%. Book early — rates and availability both tighten.
- Special care. Giving medication adds $10–$15 a visit; insulin shots $20–$35. Exotic or special-needs pets carry a premium of 25% or more.
- Multi-day discounts. Many sitters cut 10% to 25% for bookings of five days or more, so ask before you assume the nightly rate holds for a two-week trip.
Common questions
How much does a pet sitter cost per visit?
A typical US drop-in visit runs about 18 dollars for 15 minutes, 27 for 30 minutes, and 40 for an hour. Overnight care averages around 95 dollars a night. City rates run higher and rural rates lower.
How is the total cost worked out?
Multiply the per-visit or per-night rate by how many visits or nights you need, then add any extras. Each additional pet usually adds about half the base rate, and holidays add a surcharge on top.
Why does an overnight stay cost so much more than a drop-in?
A drop-in is 15 to 60 minutes of feeding, water and a walk. An overnight means the sitter sleeps at your home for 10 to 12 hours and is responsible for the house, so you pay for the time and the commitment, not just the task.
