A reusable bag only helps once you have used it enough times
Every bag carries a carbon cost from making it. A sturdier reusable bag costs more carbon up front, so it has to spread that cost over many trips before it beats a flimsy plastic bag per use. The number of trips to reach parity is the breakeven point, and it swings hugely by material.

Breakeven figures are for carbon footprint against a thin plastic bag. Plastic still wins on carbon per single use, but loses badly on litter, marine life and microplastics — which is why reuse, not the material label, is what actually matters.
How to make the numbers work
- Pick one good bag and use it everywhere. A single non-woven polypropylene bag past ~5 uses beats every single-use option per trip.
- Only buy cotton if you will really commit. It needs 130+ uses; below that it is worse than plastic.
- Reuse as a bin liner. Any worn-out bag used as a trash bag adds "uses" and pushes its per-use footprint down.
- Skip single-use paper. Its production footprint is 45–50x a plastic bag, so it only makes sense if you genuinely reuse it too.
