HRT is tank volume divided by flow

HRT = Volume ÷ Flow rate

Keep the units consistent and the answer comes out in time. A 500 m³ tank fed at 250 m³/h holds each litre of water for 2 hours on average. Double the flow and the HRT halves — which is why a storm surge can cut treatment time in half unless a balancing tank evens the flow first.

Typical HRT by process

Longer is not automatically better: too short and pollutants leave untreated, too long and you have simply built a bigger, costlier tank. These are the usual design ranges.

Ponds need days because they rely on slow natural processes; an activated-sludge plant does the same work in hours by holding a dense population of microbes.

Two things worth knowing

  • Use net inflow, not recycle. HRT = V ÷ Q uses the flow entering the tank. Sludge recirculation raises the SRT but does not change the HRT.
  • Real HRT is shorter than the formula. Dead zones and short-circuiting mean the effective time is often only 70–90% of the theoretical value, so most designs add a 20–30% margin.

Common questions

What is hydraulic retention time?

HRT is the average time a volume of water spends inside a tank or reactor. You get it by dividing the tank volume by the flow rate through it. A longer HRT gives biological or chemical processes more time to work.

How do I calculate HRT?

Divide the reactor volume by the volumetric flow rate, keeping the units consistent. A 500 cubic-metre tank fed at 250 cubic metres per hour has an HRT of 2 hours.

What is the difference between HRT and SRT?

HRT is how long the liquid stays in the tank; SRT (solids retention time) is how long the biomass or sludge stays. In a plant that recycles sludge the SRT is much longer than the HRT, which is the point of recycling.

Does temperature change HRT?

No. HRT is purely volume divided by flow, so it is the same whatever the temperature. Temperature changes how fast the process works, not how long the water sits, which is why cold weather often calls for a larger HRT.
