Typical HRT by process
Longer is not automatically better: too short and pollutants leave untreated, too long and you have simply built a bigger, costlier tank. These are the usual design ranges.

Ponds need days because they rely on slow natural processes; an activated-sludge plant does the same work in hours by holding a dense population of microbes.
Two things worth knowing
- Use net inflow, not recycle. HRT = V ÷ Q uses the flow entering the tank. Sludge recirculation raises the SRT but does not change the HRT.
- Real HRT is shorter than the formula. Dead zones and short-circuiting mean the effective time is often only 70–90% of the theoretical value, so most designs add a 20–30% margin.
