How it's calculated
miles = steps × stride ÷ 5280
steps = step count, stride = step length in feet (≈ height × 0.413 ÷ 12), 5280 = feet per mile; km = miles × 1.609344.
Worked examples
| Steps | Stride | Miles | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,000 | 2.5 ft | 0.95 | Typical default male stride |
| 5,000 | 2.5 ft | 2.37 | Short daily walk |
| 10,000 | 2.2 ft | 4.17 | Popular daily goal, female stride |
| 10,000 | 2.5 ft | 4.73 | Same goal, longer stride |
Common questions
How many steps are in a mile?
It depends on stride, but roughly 2,000 to 2,500 steps per mile for most adults. Taller people take fewer steps per mile.
How is stride length estimated?
From your height times 0.413, a standard rule for walking stride. If you skip height, it falls back to 2.5 ft for men and 2.2 ft for women.
