Steps to distance depends on your stride

Distance is your step count times how far each step covers. There are 5,280 feet in a mile, so a longer stride means fewer steps to reach it.

miles = steps × stride (ft) ÷ 5,280

The rough rule is 2,000 steps per mile, but that is just an average. Your real number tracks your height: a 2.5 ft stride is about 2,110 steps a mile, a 2.2 ft stride about 2,400.

Common step counts as distance

Using an average stride of about 2.3 ft.

The round "10,000 steps ≈ 5 miles" is close enough for a daily goal; the table sits a touch lower because it uses an average rather than a long stride.

Steps per mile by stride

HeightStrideSteps per mile
5'3" (160 cm)2.2 ft~2,430
5'7" (170 cm)2.3 ft~2,290
5'11" (180 cm)2.4 ft~2,160
6'3" (190 cm)2.6 ft~2,060

Running stretches your stride to 3 ft or more, so the same 10,000 steps at a run covers 6 to 7 miles instead of about 5 walking.
