Divide the runtime by the speed
Playback speed divides your time. At 2x you finish in half; at 1.5x in two-thirds. The catch is that the time saved is not linear — the jump from 1x to 1.5x saves far more than the jump from 2x to 2.5x, because you are already near the floor.

Scale to your own book: a 15-hour listen at 1.5x is 15 ÷ 1.5 = 10 hours, saving 5.
Faster savings shrink fast
Going from 1x to 1.5x cuts a 10-hour book by 3 h 20 m. Pushing on from 2x to 2.5x only trims another hour. Most listeners settle at 1.25x to 1.5x for a reason.
Both are half-step speed bumps, but the first one saves more than three times as much time.
Speed by material
- Complex plots. Thrillers, fantasy and literary fiction reward 1x to 1.25x, where world-building and twists land properly.
- Non-fiction and familiar series. 1.5x to 2x works, since the pacing is predictable and repetition can be skimmed.
- Narration matters. A well-produced audiobook holds up at high speed; a weak or self-narrated one falls apart above 1.5x.

How do I work out listening time at a faster speed?
Divide the runtime by the speed multiplier. A 10-hour book at 1.5x takes 10 / 1.5 = 6 hours and 40 minutes. At 2x it takes 5 hours.
How much time does 1.5x actually save?
A third of the runtime. At 1.5x you finish in two-thirds of the time, so a 12-hour book saves 4 hours. At 2x you save half; at 1.25x you save a fifth.
What is the fastest speed I can still follow?
For most people comprehension holds up to about 1.5x to 2x. Above 2x retention drops off fast, so save the high speeds for familiar or light material and slow down for complex plots.
