Whole years, then the leftover months and days
The gap between two dates is reported as full years first, then the remaining full months, then the leftover days — the natural way people state age or tenure. It counts real calendar length, so the changing length of months (28 to 31 days) and leap years are already built in, not smoothed over with an average.
What a "full year" actually counts
- Anniversary, not 365 days. A full year runs from a date to the same date next year, whether that span is 365 or 366 days. Multiplying whole years by 365 drifts by about a day every four years.
- Order does not matter. The result is the absolute gap, so the earlier and later dates can be entered either way round.
- Including the end day. Legal and contractual counting is sometimes inclusive of the final day, which adds one day and can tip the result over a month or year boundary.
- End-of-month edges. Spanning from the last day of a long month into a shorter one is where "months and days" answers legitimately differ between tools.

The day range depends on how many leap years the span happens to contain, which is why the exact figure needs real dates rather than a fixed year length.
Common questions
Is a year always 365 days?
No. A leap year has 366 days, one falls roughly every four years, and the Gregorian average is 365.2425 days. That is why counting whole years is not the same as dividing total days by 365.
How is someone born on February 29 aged in a common year?
Most jurisdictions treat the birthday as falling on March 1 in years that have no February 29, so the person completes another year of age on that day. Some insurers instead use February 28.
Why do two calculators sometimes disagree on the months and days?
They handle end-of-month borrowing differently. Going from the 31st of one month to the end of a shorter month can read as "1 month" in one tool and as a day count in another. Neither is wrong; the results just use different conventions.
