There is no single conversion — it depends on the ingredient
A cup is a volume; a pound is a weight. How much a cup weighs depends on how dense the ingredient is. A cup of flour and a cup of honey differ by almost three times, so you always need the specific ingredient.

One measuring cup holds the same volume every time, but what it weighs swings with the ingredient. Flour is fluffy and light; honey is heavy and dense.

Rules of thumb, and what throws them off
- Water and milk. About 0.5 lb per cup — roughly 2 cups to the pound.
- Flour. About 0.28 lb per cup, so nearly 4 cups make a pound.
- Butter is exact. 2 cups = 1 lb, because a stick is a quarter pound.
- Packed vs loose. Brown sugar packed is 0.49 lb per cup; loose it drops to about 0.31. Recipes assume packed unless they say otherwise.
- Cup size matters. An imperial cup (284 mL) is about 20% larger than a US cup (237 mL), so its weight per cup is higher too.
Common questions
Is there one cups-to-pounds conversion?
No. It depends entirely on the ingredient. One cup of water is about 0.52 lb, but one cup of flour is only about 0.28 lb and one cup of honey is about 0.75 lb. Always use the figure for your specific ingredient.
How many cups of flour are in a pound?
About 3.6 cups of all-purpose flour, measured by spooning it loosely into the cup and leveling off. Bread flour is closer to 3.5 cups and cake flour about 3.9.
How many cups of butter are in a pound?
Exactly 2 cups, or 4 sticks. Each US stick is a quarter pound and half a cup, so butter is one of the few ingredients with a clean, exact conversion.
