How the gap is counted down to the day
The difference is measured from the earlier birthday forward: full years first, then the remaining months, then the days that don't complete a month. When the day figure would go negative it borrows from the month, and a negative month borrows from the years. That borrowing is what makes the count honest about February, leap years and 31-day months rather than rounding everything to "about X years."
Why a gap in days is not just years × 365
- Leap years. Every span crossing a 29 February picks up an extra day, so two "10-year" gaps can differ by a day or two in total days.
- Uneven months. One year on from 31 January lands on 28 or 29 February, not 31 March. The exact method tracks this; a flat 30.44-day month only approximates it.
- Off-by-one. Whether you count the birthday itself changes the day total by one. State the gap as years, months and days to avoid the ambiguity a single day count carries.
What counts as a typical gap
Most couples are closer in age than people assume, and the average has narrowed over the past century.

Common questions
How is the age gap worked out in years, months and days?
Take the two birth dates and subtract the earlier from the later. Start with the whole years between them, then the extra months, then the leftover days. If a day count goes negative it borrows from the month above it, which is why the result respects real month lengths and leap years instead of assuming every month is 30 days.
Is an age gap the same for both people forever?
Yes. The gap between two fixed birth dates never changes. If one person is 4 years and 2 months older today, that stays true for life, even though both ages keep rising. Only the reference date shifts the ages, not the difference between them.
What does the "half your age plus seven" rule say?
It is a social rule of thumb, not science: the youngest age someone should date is your age divided by 2, then plus 7. At 30 that gives 22. It has no research backing and ignores maturity and life stage, so treat it as folklore.
