The rule, and why one age gives two birth years
Age counts completed years, so it does not tell you the birthday. A person who states one age was born somewhere inside a full 12-month window. If their birthday this year has already happened, the birth year is current year minus age; if it has not, it is one year earlier. Both are valid until you know the month and day.
What you can and cannot recover
- From age alone — a birth year, give or take one, and nothing finer.
- From age plus month and day — the exact birth date, because the ±1-year ambiguity collapses once you know whether the birthday has passed.
- The edge case — someone whose birthday is today sits exactly on the boundary; their age ticks over on the reference date itself.
Where reverse age comes up
Estimating a birth year from a stated age is routine when only the age is on record.
- Records and forms — reconstructing an approximate birth year from a census entry, headstone, or old document that lists age at a known date.
- Eligibility checks — confirming someone was born before or after a cutoff for a benefit, licence, or school year.
- Generation labels — a birth year places someone in a cohort (for example, Millennials are 1981–1996 and Gen Z is 1997–2012).
Common questions
How do I work out a birth year from an age?
Subtract the age from the current year. That gives the birth year only if the person has already had their birthday this year; if they have not, they were born one year earlier. So a single age maps to two possible birth years, not one.
Why can I only get a birth year, not an exact date, from an age?
An age in whole years covers a full 12-month window of birth dates. Everyone who is 40 today was born on some day within a one-year span. To pin the exact date you also need the birthday, or at least the month and day.
How does a leap-year birthday affect this?
Someone born on February 29 only has a calendar birthday every four years. In common years their age is usually counted from February 28 or March 1, so the birth year still follows the same rule.
