Business days are weekdays minus holidays

business days = calendar days weekends holidays

A business day is any Monday-to-Friday that is not a public holiday. In a standard week five of the seven days count, so business days run at about five-sevenths (0.71) of calendar days, before you subtract any holidays that land on a weekday.

Calendar days stretch much further as business days

Because roughly two days in seven drop out, the same target reaches noticeably deeper into the calendar once you count only weekdays.

30 calendar days~21 business days
30 business days~42 calendar days

Thirty business days lands about 12 calendar days later than thirty calendar days — and holidays push it further still.

The details that trip people up

  • Weekends are not universal. Saturday–Sunday is the Western norm, but the Middle East often uses Friday–Saturday and Israel uses Friday–Saturday with a Sunday start to the week.
  • Holidays need a list. The US has 11 federal holidays; a weekday count only removes them if you supply the dates, and movable ones change each year.
  • A holiday on a weekend. In the US it is usually observed on the nearest weekday, so a Saturday holiday shifts to Friday and a Sunday one to Monday.
  • Counting endpoints. Whether the start and end dates are included changes the total by a day, so check that setting for deadlines.

Common questions

What counts as a business day?

Any weekday, Monday through Friday, that is not a public holiday. Saturdays and Sundays never count, and neither do holidays that fall on a weekday.

How do I estimate business days in my head?

Multiply the calendar days by five-sevenths, or about 0.71. So 30 calendar days is roughly 21 business days, before removing any holidays.

Are holidays removed automatically?

Only if you tell the calculator which ones to exclude. Public holidays vary by country and some move each year, so a plain weekday count leaves them in unless you add them.
